Measurements of airway mechanics in spontaneously breathing young children

Abstract 

This paper gives an overview of the general principles of airway mechanics and methods to measure lung fuction in non-sedated, spontaneously breathing young children. Although lower airway obstruction is probably best evaluated using FEV₁, other techniques can be applied when such measurement is impossible, as in young children. These techniques include measurement of resistance using the interrupter or impulse oscillation techniques.
